Every year those that know how to decipher political BS knows that the jobs are really disappearing and that our nation’s recovery is nothing but a very bad joke… This holds true more for our manufacturing sector which was the backbone of the strong American middle class that supported our nation’s steady growth for almost half century.
With the programs like NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) we lost millions of jobs and the dismal push of our current administration still trying to outsource more of Americas jobs with program like TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership) we will lose millions more.
According to a report on outsourcing by Working America, “Manufacturing employment collapsed from a high of 19.5 million workers in June 1979 to 11.5 workers in December 2009, a drop of 8 million workers over 30 years. Between August 2000 and February 2004, manufacturing jobs were lost for a stunning 43 consecutive months—the longest such stretch since the Great Depression.” Manufacturing plants have also declined sharply in the last decade, shrinking by more than 51,000 plants, or 12.5 percent, between 1998 and 2008. These stable, middle-class jobs have been the driving force of the U.S. economy for decades and theses losses have done considerable damage to communities across the country. The saddest part about all this mess is the one thing that most people seem to forget is that this move may have created a nation of cheap affordable products, the quality has pretty much disappeared. And, everything from weed whackers to TV sets have become disposal. With the durability of these products non-existent we’ve been blinded by our own BS we’ve somehow tricked ourselves into believing that having cheaper products with a shorter lifespan is better for us. When in fact it only reduces the short-term cost while increase our long-term expenses. In other words, we end up buying several cheap crappy foreign products when at one time all we had to do what buy one high quality, reasonably priced American Made one that would last a lifetime.
All because our corporate leaders and CEO’s have become so stupid that they can no longer turn a profit for their shareholder with ingenuity like once great Apples, Steve Job’s. These overpaid wastes of space now resort to regulating the common worker to line item on a spread sheet while the only way the can seem to turn a profit is by gobbling up other companies or by using slave labor to increase profits. Of which conveniently helped turned our once most hated and feared adversary into a new friend. All it took was selling out the America so we can make room for a few hundreds new billionaires and handing over our number one position in the global economy to the very same adversary we gave up most of our jobs to. Piece of cake… The sad part is, the solutions pretty easy!
How do we fix the mess?
Manufacturing is key to economic survival! America knows it, and apparently China got the memo. The biggest difference is, we didn’t have hundreds of millions of slaves and a complete disregard for our environment which was needed to turn out crappy products a half the cost. Even though we’d have to buy 10 of something or our lifetime that we once only used to have to but once. Yay us!
Sadly this fix is simple, but will probably never get passed because our leaders pretty much suck at everything they do. The only thing they are good at is creating excuses, passing the blame and convincing America that they we need to re-elect them (or someone just like them) because they are solution to the very problems they created. Even though, they have no plan, no experience in problems solving and have been failing at leading our nation for many terms in office… Seriously, we are really that stupid sometimes!
So how do we buck the trend and bring back American manufacturing jobs? Well we require major retailer to increase the merchandise they buy by 5% a year until they decrease the “real” unemployment rate to 5%. Helping to create millions of jobs and more high quality products that both Americans and foreign nations once swooned over. Very simple, easy to apply.
But Won’t That Drive Up Cost & Drive Down Profits
It can, but with a little tweak it won’t. The only thing our elected officials would need to do is create a tax rebate that would push cost of purchasing the American product to the same price level as buying the foreign bought cheaper product until it all balances out so little to no additional cost is incurred by the company. As I am sure that no American would have a problem with a large corporation paying little to no taxes if they were producing millions of tax paying jobs. Helping to increase the nations GDP, create jobs while helping improve the image of Made in America products, manufacturer and retailers once again. Heck, I wouldn’t even doubt it if it create more tax revenue as well in the process!
So yes, it can be done and we can help turn our nation around with just one piece of legislation. It’s the right thing to do and everyone win’s accept for those jobs lost overseas. As I’m sure the squirted a lot of tears when millions of American lost their jobs as well… It’s all about balance and seeing as we seriously tipped the scale in everyone else’s favor, it’s about time we tipped it back towards the American people who made this country great and helped prop up all those rich people to begin with.
Wouldn’t you agree? What are your thoughts on this idea…?
